Jan Pohribný is a Czech photographer, artist and educator. He specializes in landscape photography and land-art. In his photographic work he uses multiple exposures in combination with motion blur as creative methods. It combines not only the principles of movement, distinctive color traces or monochromatic solutions, but also uses light paintings, which “visualize” the energies of selected natural sites or sacred stones erected by human hands - megaliths. He is a QEP (Qualified European Photographer).

Biography

Jan Pohribny, a Czech photographer born in Prague, has composed several series of photographs dealing with the interrelationship of nature and man. Born into a family closely associated with the arts, he drew his inspiration from his father, an art critic, and his mother, a book illustrator, painter, and occasional photographer. Beginning his career as a teenager Pohribny states, “I discovered my first camera- a Kodak Baby Brownie- in San Marco Cathedral in Venice, Italy. I say I received it as a gift from God. Some tourists left the camera on a Church chair, which I incidentally happened to spot.” While Pohribny credits his mother as his first teacher, his first formal training was in 1976 at a secondary school for Graphic Arts in Praque. He attended school there until 1980. In 1981-1986, Pohribny was a part of the Film and TV faculty of the Academy of Fine Arts- the Department of Artistic Photography; and from 1985-1986 he enrolled in a six month study program at the University of Fine Arts in Helsinki, Finland. Since 1986, he has worked as a free-lance photographer/artist and often works in the field of design and illustration photography. Pohribny participates in a number of organizations. He is a member of both the Professional Photographers Association and the Prague House of Photography. As of 1995, he is a founding member and president of the Society for ZnDtician Culture Renovation. In addition, he works as a part-time professor at Silesian University, Institute of Creative Photography. Pohribny has had a number of individual exhibitions from1984 to the present day, and he has contributed to some collections as well.

Artistic Process

Since 1983, Pohribny has worked on several series of photographs all aimed at capturing the aura of a given moment, a natural object, or the fate of human existence. In his first two series, Pigments and Fliers, he introduces his viewers to his basic principles and methods. His photographs attempt to reconnect nature and man through the awareness of a higher spiritual order. Emphasizing color and landscape, Pohribny finds the means to clearly convey his message.

In his first series, Pigments (1983-84), Pohribny interacts with nature in order to accent its shapes and contours and also to mark his place in the environment. Juxtaposing human interaction and nature, the photographs recall an ancient time and have an inherent magical quality. In Sign (1983), Pohribny’s purple ink splatter recalls ancient cave paintings. Titling the work Sign, he draws attention to the fact that the ancients left marks of themselves within nature and elicits focus on the triangle that emerges scratched into the rocky surface. The triangle is a recurring symbol in Pohribny’s work and a universal spiritual theme. In Hinduism the triune of Energies is known as Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma; In Christianity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; in Judaism: Kathu, Chochman, and Binah; and in ancient Egypt: Ra, Osiris, and Horus. These examples highlight the pivotal importance of the sacred Triangle in spiritual thought. The interaction of these three divine creative principles characterizes proper path to form the inner spiritual matrix. Pohribny’s interest in meditation and the chakra system makes it evident that the triangle’s importance lies in the virtues of body, mind, and spirit. Thus, juxtaposing the triangle with an image reminiscent of the ancients, he communicates a desire to regain a spiritual relationship with nature similar to the ancient admiration of the land. Also, the circle is an important shape and occurs, like the triangle, throughout Pohribny’s works. The circle has neither beginning nor end. It is the figure symbolic of the number one; one is in all and all is in one. Never ending, the circle represents an innumerable amount of ideas, beliefs, and occurrences. Most often the circle is seen as emblematic of eternity and the interdependency of all things earthly and spiritually, e.g. the circle of life.

Pohribny’s next series, Fliers (1985-86), emphasizes space, movement, and the ephemeral quality of human life. Photographing a feather, an apple, or a balloon in mid-air, Pohribny captures the fleeting moment that these objects are arrested in the spaces that humans cannot occupy. Looking at these photographs, we are compelled to imagine themselves as Pohribny’s flying objects, enticing us into a magical existence. However, along this journey we also recognize that this is a frozen moment that will soon end. Just as human existence is time-limited, so too is the flight of these objects. Flying high above an endless expanse of water, the objects will soon be swallowed by the impending waves, and washed away. Within the non-human arena, these objects momentarily defy movement and communicate a metaphor for the inevitable human fate.

While Pohribny’s first two series are beautiful manifestations, the two series, The New Stone Age (1988-2001) and Angels (1999-2001), stand out as his most commendable works. In these photographs, we see Pohribny’s desire to clothe the spirit and energy within nature. His photographs give form to things that are otherwise not visible. The colors he uses bring his ideas into the present day, as if to say, this is possible, man can regain his roots within nature. In that, Pohribny’s photographs make us question reality in a way that forces us to think about our own perceptions. They make us rethink the supernatural and how it fits into our lives. They insist on emphasizing nature and its energy in order to find our own place in the world. Pohribny offers us a place within his spiritual landscape. He invites us in. And he gives form to a world previously unknown.

“A large collection of my work is specifically dedicated to a special part of our prehistory- what we know as the age of megaliths. Natural objects like huge stones standing in the landscapes and their ancient monumental beauty fascinate me a lot. They have a beauty of their own. I felt and still feel that we are loosing the connection with nature, that which was prevalent some time ago. I started making my own interpretations of nature and ancient culture, and wanted my images to be a link to the harmony that we now have lost.”

By incorporating these giant stones, Pohribny adds a sense of the mysterious past of the ancients and reminds us of their integration with nature. However, Pohribny positions and illuminates the megalith in order to communicate that the megalith itself is not the subject. Instead, the one megalith vertically standing tall in the center of the photograph is reminiscent of the human form. Drawing a parallel between a natural element and the human element, Pohribny’s megalith evokes the desire for the integration of nature and man.
