Miro Švolík is a Slovak photographer living in Prague, who focuses mainly on photography combined with a number of artistic elements and photographic montages. He moved to Prague after studying at the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Bratislava, where he focused on applied photography (among others under the leadership of Milota Havránková). While studying photography at FAMU, he joined the group of similarly old authors called the Slovak New Wave (Rudo Prekop, Vasil Stanko, Tono Stano, Kamil Varga and Peter Zupnik). He remained active on the Czech photographic scene both after completing his studies, when he was one of the initiators and members of the Prague House of Photography (1991–97), and after the split of Czechoslovakia.
In Švolík's work, which typically strikes a balance between "applied - advertising" and "free - artistic" work, it is possible to mark several imaginary wholes or interests that gradually change and permeate. After the mid-1990s, female acts or photographic fragments of the female body occupy a prominent position in his work. "Unlike Stan's photos, they are not sensually sexual and differ from Stanek, who are in some respects brutal, in their sense of wit and playful eroticism," Vaclav Macek writes about Svolik's approach compared to peers and protagonists of the New Slovak Wave. However, Švolík's “erotic” joke focused exclusively on the female body after the 1980s, when his photographs still show pairs (male-female).
When talking about Švolík as a post-modern photographer, there are several reasons for this. On the one hand, in his work he has always artfully moved between the world of advertising or so-called "used photography" and "free - artistic" photography, which have been two inseparably connected worlds since the beginning of photography. On the other hand, Švolík as an author never hesitates to work with simple and sophisticated references to the history of art and photography. At the same time, it does not prevent the penetration of artistic media and genres. Especially for photographers included in the New Slovak Wave is typical play with arrangement and theatricality.
Since Švolík often builds his paintings on historical foundations, it is appropriate to recall parallels, especially in the early days of his work. At that time, he built scenes on large areas, which he then shot from a great height, achieving flatness and painting or collage-like image quality. The background of the scenes, often concrete, asphalt, lawn or pavement, is the background of the story, but the background is not negligible. Švolík could be inspired by the work of the previous generation or by the authors specifically working with paintings “found” in clumsy plaster and asphalt remnants, such as Emila Medková or Vilém Reichmann. However, Švolík smooths out the harsh structures by simple symbolism of the scenes taking place on them (photographs "My life of man", 1986 or "To his native chest of the earth", 1986 and many others from the 80s. years) or themes often fairy tale. The author also uses fairy-tale motifs in his color photographs from 1987.
The symbols and pictograms that inhabited wide fields from the height of the structures seen in the 1980s are gradually starting to live their own lives and becoming independent figures of Švolík's collages, photograms and photographs. Some pictograms then turn into framing the entire photograph. Here too the irony of Švolík's work is apparent, when in the cycle “Back to the Nature”, 1992–97, it defines and complements nature with the silhouettes of man. These supplements are natural formations as human as human forms may resemble geological and botanical. By the similarities in shape, where the toes of the roofs become breasts and the inverted mountain range round their plump butt, Švolík enjoys himself throughout his creative activity. And it is precisely guiltlessness or a certain naivety.
