Arno Rafael Minkkinen

Arno Rafael MINKKINEN, Finno-American photographer exhibited throughout the world received in October 2013 the "Lucie Award for Achievement in Fine Arts." Since the '70s he has created black and white self-portraits. These pictures, made with no trick or subsequent alteration, and without assistance, capture the viewer both by the landscape in which the body appears or disappears, and by the audacious and surprising instant caught in the frame.

Born in Helsinki in 1945, Arno Rafael Minkkinen moved with his family to America in 1951. Raised in Brooklyn, New York, he later attended Wagner College on Staten Island, majoring in English. After five years in the advertising business as a Madison Avenue copywriter, he discovered photography working on the Minolta camera account. “What happens inside your mind can happen inside a camera,” was the turning-point headline he wrote in 1970. A year later, studying with John Benson at the Apeiron Workshops in Millerton, New York, he began his self-portrait work.
He received his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, studying with Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. Currently he is Professor of Art at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. He is also docent and visiting professor at the University of Art & Design Helsinki and École d’Art Appliqués in Vevey, Switzerland.

Whether he is working along lakeshores or beaches, in cities or forests, from majestic mountaintops or buried in the snow, Minkkinen aims to create a balance between the naked human form and the natural and urban worlds wherein we exist, re- minding us that we are foremost beings without clothes. the results can be surreal, spiritual, and transformative, often tinged with a profound sense of humor. Arno Rafael Minkkinen is quite singular in his pursuit of a sin- gular subject—himself naked in the land—and a singular style. For fifty remarkably fruitful years he has persisted with and rung the changes on that subject—with a few asides, including women, his son, cities—that for a while expand that subject in idiosyncratic ways.
An inventor of bodily adventures, he might on occasion be sus- pected of breathing through gills, or even of having mastered antigravity ... his body still performing outrageously well though his hair has gone gray. He is still surprising, amusing, deadly seri- ous, tricky, a maker of visual puns and conundrums, and some- times hard to find in the photographs. He plays hide-and-seek, he plays how did he do that, he plays things are seldom what they seem, he produces fantasies, apparitions, puzzles, jokes.
Minkkinen’s lifelong process of invention and discovery has been the product of a seemingly simple insight: to trust the validity of his own instincts. The result has been one of the modern era’s most original and powerful bodies of photographic art. Far from representing any sort of creative “limitation,” Minkkinen’s dedi- cated meditation on his own form has generated an oeuvre of re- markable depth and meaning. While the artist’s basic concerns have been consistent over time, his vision has grown steadily in range and nuance.
